On the Arizona-Utah border, the forces of nature coalesce to created a unique other-worldly geology that is truly a sight to behold. Here, soaring canyon walls merge with sandy ground, hoodoos and mushroom-shaped formations punctuate the landscape, and reflecting pools shimmer under the desert sky. Colors ranges from soft pastels to the most vivid desert orange."

Marcus W. Most intriguing are the conical-shaped sandstone formations (teepees), striped with vividly colored mineral deposits. We've learned to tread cautiously near the teepees and horizontal expanses of scultpted sandstone, as the fins on these elegant rock formations are fragile and easily destroyed. Likely, this is on of the reasons for restricted access to this vulnerable area, with the BLM issuing only a few day passes for Cottonwood Springs and the Wave."

Marcus W.

Marcus W. After photographing a series of wide angle panoramic scenes, I noticed a vivid blue sky reflection in the pool right at my feet. After a bit of maneuvering, I was to get my trip situated for this photo “from above.” From this perspective, the camera was able to capture both the placid reflecting pool and the surrounding textured rock formations. Moments later, our outing was cut short by another impending thunderstorm and foreboding skies on the eastern horizon. The stormy conditions added a bit of drama to our trip, making this an especially memorable photo of a dramatic day at the remote Vermilion Cliffs.

A B&W circular polarizer was used to reduce glare from the surface of the water and rocks. Here, soaring canyon walls merge with sandy ground, hoodoos and mushroom-shaped formations punctuate the landscape, and reflecting pools shimmer under the desert sky.

Marcus W.
