Eye to the Sky Reflection, White Pocket, Paria Plateau in Northern Arizona

Following a major rainstorm, we were fortunate to find clear reflecting pools at the generally arid White Pockets. After photographing a series of wide angle panoramic scenes, I noticed a vivid blue sky reflection in the pool right at my feet. After a bit of maneuvering, I was to get my trip situated for this photo “from above.” From this perspective, the camera was able to capture both the placid reflecting pool and the surrounding textured rock formations. Moments later, our outing was cut short by another impending thunderstorm and foreboding skies on the eastern horizon. The stormy conditions added a bit of drama to our trip, making this an especially memorable photo of a dramatic day at the remote Vermilion Cliffs.

A B&W circular polarizer was used to reduce glare from the surface of the water and rocks. Exposure:. Nikon D200 camera, Nikkor DX 18-70 mm 1:3.5 – 4.5G ED lens, and a Gitzo G 2220 tripod with a Manfrotto 486 head.
